Frequently Asked Questions
Why are background checks required?
All volunteers who regularly interact with players are required to pass a background check to ensure the safety of every child in our program.
Why is a $175 equipment deposit check required?
This check is held (not cashed) as a guarantee that equipment will be returned in good condition at the end of the season. Lost or unreturned gear may result in charges to your account.
What should I know about equipment distribution?
- Players must be present for fittings—equipment won’t be issued to parents without them.
- Bring a $175 deposit check (held, not cashed).
- Choose to buy your own helmet? You'll need to sign a waiver.
- You must purchase cleats and a mouthguard separately.
My child’s helmet hurts. What should I do?
Helmets are tight to protect against injury. Do not alter the helmet padding. If it’s painful, talk to your coach or the MARA Athletic Director.
Where are games held?
Most games are at MARA (1200 S. Trade St., Matthews, NC). View our field map.
When do games start? When will I see the schedule?
Schedules are typically released 10 days before the first game.
What if there’s bad weather?
Check our website or your coach’s messages. Decisions are often made at the field.
Is smoking allowed at MARA?
No. Smoking, vaping, alcohol, and firearms are prohibited on the property.
Can I bring pets to the field?
Pets are not allowed at MARA due to insurance liability concerns.
How much time is involved?
Practice starts a week before games. Once the season begins, practices are one hour before the game.
When do teams practice?
Preseason: coach’s discretion. During season: one hour before each game.
Are MARA coaches paid?
No. Our coaches and committee members are dedicated volunteers.
Do I need to buy equipment?
MARA provides a helmet and uniform. You keep the uniform; helmets must be returned. You must purchase cleats and a mouthguard.
How much playing time will my child get?
Every child plays. Coaches choose positions based on skill and safety.
